Resolution

All laptops come with a minimum resolution of 1366x768 and shelling more money will give you a Full HD 1920x1080 display. If you're a power user or a content creator then you might want to look at the few laptops that offer ridiculous amounts of resolution like the Lenovo Y50 which provides a UHD 4K display.

Types of Display

The most common type of display is the TN LCD Glossy which as the name states is glossy in nature. So, be prepared to see your face more than the content on the display especially in sunlight. To avoid the ugly reflections, get a laptop that has a matte display which overcomes the reflections. IPS displays are the one to go for if you want lots of viewing angles as the colors on an IPS display stay constant irrespective of the angle at which you're looking. The disadvantage to IPS displays though is that they have slower refresh rates than the traditional TN displays and it may be a hinderance to hard-core gamers playing online.

OLED - The Future

Way back in 2010, Samsung showed OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screens on their laptops. These displays provided 40% transparency so that objects behind the display would be visible. 5 years later and OLED screens are yet to be implemented in consumer laptops but their era is not far away.

Tl;dr

If you want vivid colors and lots viewing angles for binge watching TV shows with a large group, go for IPS displays. They are costly, but worth it. If refresh rates are your game then TN is the way to go. Want to work in bright sunlight? Matte TN screens is for you as there won't be any reflections to hinder your viewing experience.
